The School is pleased to announce that Molly Hunker (MArch, UCLA) will act as the inaugural Douglas A. Garofalo Fellow for the 2013–2014 academic year. As Fellow, Hunker will teach studio and seminar courses, pursue independent design research, and prepare a public lecture and exhibition for Spring 2014.
Visiting Assistant Thomas Kelley has been named a winner of the Rome Prize in Architecture, a prestigious fellowship that includes a research residency at the American Academy in Rome, Italy. Kelley's research proposal, titled "Economy of Illusions: A (re)Valuation of Rome's Visual Culture," will examine Rome's lineage of optics and visual effects in order to recuperate the instrumental value of visuality in architecture.
Assistant Professor Stewart Hicks and Visiting Assistant Professor Allison Newmeyer were recently named 2013 MacDowell Colony Fellows. Hicks and Newmeyer will be in residency at the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire for one month this summer studying the concept of character within architecture.
Professor Sharon Haar and Clinical Assistant Professor Julie Flohr, with UIC historian Jennifer Brier, are part of a team developing "History Moves," a "museum on wheels" that received a $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts this April. The project uses a traveling gallery to produce and present new verious of public history with the participation of community groups throughout Chicago.
Fourth-year BSArch student Kevin Pazik's project "Learning from The Dells: A Field Guide to Creating a Tourist Hub" received the Undergraduate Sustainability Award at the UIC Student Research Forum, an annual symposium where student work is judged by faculty and alumni from disciplines across the University.
Third-year MArch student Taylor Holloway has been awarded the 2013 Martin Roche Travel Scholarship by the AIA Chicago Foundation. Holloway will recieve a grant of $5,000 to travel to South Africa and investigate a metric for determining the success of public interest design.
Teams of UIC faculty and students were winners in two of four sites in ACTIVATE! 2013, a design competition to reinvigorate public space in Chicago neighborhoods on a $1,000 budget. Visiting Teaching Associate Meghan Funk and fourth-year BSArch student Kevin Pazik tied for first place at the Woodlawn site, and third-year BSArch student Nichole Tortorici and fourth-year BSArch students Marko Dumlija and Felicia Franzese received first place at the Old Town site. Both proposals will be constructed this summer.
