Tasneem Chowdhury

Tasneem A. Chowdhury is Associate Director at the UIC City Design Center (CDC). Tasneem holds an MArch degree from McGill University, Canada and a BArch from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.
At the CDC, Tasneem has provided design assistance to non-profit organizations to support housing development and urban renewal projects. These include a community art/culture facility for a Chicago public school, a supportive housing project for people with disabilities, design education workshops for public housing residents, and a pilot project with the Chicago Department of Housing on targeted block improvement. As Associate Editor, Tasneem helped develop the pioneering CDC "Design Matters" internet affordable housing catalog. She also served as Associate Curator for the "Design Innovations in Manufactured Housing" exhibit at the Field Museum.
Previously, Tasneem worked for many years as a practicing architect in the Middle East, designing a variety of building projects, including single family residences, apartment buildings, office buildings, recreational facilities, mosques and mixed use developments. She has also been active in teaching and research at universities and community-based organizations in Canada.
Tasneem has several publications on housing and urban development issues, including a book Urban Sustainability in the Third World (Winnipeg: Institute of Urban Studies, 1994). Most recently, she co-authored a chapter in The Chicago Greystone in Historic North Lawndale (City Design Center, 2006).
