The School's annual Portfolio Day celebration will take place Friday, February 3 in Gallery 1100 A+A. Alumni are invited to view the portfolios and vote for Alumni Choice award winners beginning at 4:30pm. The exhibit opens to the public at 6pm. For more information, please contact Jenna Wolf.
17 January Assistant Professors Clare Lyster and Judith De Jong were awarded the 2011–2012 ACSA/AIA Housing Design Education Award, Excellence in Housing Education Course or Activity for the submission Housing Urbanism: 5 Proposals for Chicago, which included work from the students of Arch 554: Housing Urbanism. Lyster and De Jong conducted the graduate studio with McLain Clutter in spring 2008, and the design work was supported by architectural technology faculty Professor Dan Wheeler and Clinical Assistant Professor Andy Moddrell.
5 December The School is pleased to announce the appointment of the following faculty members: Clinical Professors Sam Jacob (FAT) and Andrew Zago (Zago Architecture), Assistant Professors Kelly Bair and Lluis Ortega, and Clinical Assistant Professors Paul Andersen, Julia Capomaggi, Grant Gibson, and Andrew Moddrell. Branden Hookway will be joining the faculty as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2012. This cohort of appointments adds significantly to the international design reputation of the faculty, as well as expanding the School's continuing commitment to the areas of advanced technology and contemporary theory and criticism.
2 December The School is honored to announce the creation of the Douglas A. Garofalo Fellowship, an endowed fund dedicated to bringing a young practitioner or recent graduate to teach and conduct independent design research within the School of Architecture. 22 November Associate Professor Sarah Dunn's firm UrbanLab has been named a finalist in the 2012 Young Architects Program competition hosted by MoMA PS1. UrbanLab is also part of a team led by landscape architecture firm !melk on the shortlist for the Navy Pier redesign competition.
22 November A team led by Professor Xavier Vendrell's firm Xavier Vendrell Studio has been named one of five finalists for the Navy Pier redesign competition. The 13-firm team also includes Grimshaw Architects, planners Harley Ellis Devereaux, and lighting firm Schuler Shook. Proposals from the five shortlisted teams will be exhibited to the public February 2, with a winner announced in mid-February. For details, see the Navy Pier Centennial Vision website.
