PLATFORMS

May 30-June 13, 2009

Space is still available in both tracks! Register by May 26, 2009.

Platforms provides a rapid and targeted introduction to contemporary techniques of architectural design. The two week, non-credit workshop delivers software and conceptualization skills in a way that equips participants to begin original compositions in architecture immediately upon completion. Through digital techniques and methods of production, the courses will introduce tools that allow for generation and visual discrimination of shapes, enabling students to see and create architecture through the process of "formal analysis."

Students will engage four software packages (Maya, Rhinoceros, Illustrator, and Photoshop) and become introduced to rapid prototyping for the purpose of digital design visualization and composition. Platforms provides a technique overview and two focused design tracks to explore topics in composition and scripting.

Design Tracks

Track I: Composed (Paul Preissner and Ryan Johnson)
Mon, Wed, Thu: 2-5pm

Focusing on composition and visual identity, this track looks to develop a new distinction in pop formalism. Using NURBS and Sub-Divisional modeling along with techniques in animation, Composed will propose new outcomes for shape effects and architectural characters in software-based design. Exploring new techniques in visual communication including animations/digital diagrams/rapid-prototyping will accompany this track.

Track II: Scripted (Laura Fehlberg and Mark Nagis)
Mon, Wed, Thu: 6-9pm

Looking beyond composition, this track aims to harness the potential of algorithmic and parametric tools in building consistency, coherency, traceability and intelligence into previously uncharted systems and behaviors. Form is made responsive by defining its geometry with governing restraints, user controlled shifts and recursive data feeds, creating a single form comprised of a multiplicity of inputs (Parametrics). This track provides an introductory investigation into the structures, processes and theories of these two paradigms: Scripting and Parametrics.
