Y ARCH Frequently Asked Questions

I don't have any architecture experience. Can I participate in Y ARCH?

Yes. Y ARCH is only open to those without previous architecture experience, including students and working professionals with backgrounds in related areas. The only prerequisite is your interest.

What will I get out of Y ARCH?

Y ARCH provides an introduction to architecture as it is taught in the classroom and practiced in the city. At the end of the four week program, participants will complete a portfolio of their work that can be incorporated into an application for graduate study in architecture, or added to an existing body of work. Participants will also display their work to the School and the public at a capstone reception and exhibition in our galleries.

For those who don't plan on pursuing a career in architecture, Y ARCH's workshops and lectures will offer hand and computer drawing tools for improved graphic communication, familiarity and networking with Chicago firms and architects, and the chance to explore new perspectives on the built environment.

Are any specific math or engineering skills necessary?

No. The anchor of Y ARCH is a studio running throughout the four weeks that builds upon studies and exercises to create a final project. Focus will be on design and communication, not technical skills, although technical issues may be discussed in lectures and case studies.

Should I include all work experiences with my resume, even if everything I've done is unrelated to architecture?

Definitely. Y ARCH is looking for a group of individuals who will work well together and bring their unique personalities and backgrounds to the table. Please include any experiences that have been important to you.

Can you offer more specific guidelines for the statement of intent and examples of creative work on the application?

The statement of intent allows you to explain your background, interests, and goals. A good statement of intent provides a context for your application: why you're interested in Y ARCH and how the program will fit into your plans.

The "creative work" requirement is open to your interpretation. As long as it's your own work, anything that shows your visual curiosity, talents, and interests is appropriate. No experience in technical drawing is necessary.

Are scholarships available?

Unfortunately, no scholarships are available for Y ARCH 2008. The School hopes to offer scholarships in future summers. Please contact Jayne Kelley with more questions.
